OpenClaw is a self-hosted AI agent gateway with direct access to your terminal, file system, and network. When you use it to install Solana tooling, CLI packages, or run scripts, you're trusting it with the same access you have. That's powerful — and risky.

So What Is OpenClaw, Exactly?
OpenClaw isn't a package manager. It's not an SDK. It's a self-hosted AI control plane — a Gateway that connects chat apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and more) to AI agents running on your hardware.
The Gateway
A long-lived background process on your machine that manages channel connections, session states, and routes messages to AI agents. It runs on port 18789 by default.
Nodes
Companion apps on macOS, iOS, and Android that extend OpenClaw's reach — giving agents access to your camera, screen, file system, and even system.run commands.
Tools
Agents get access to tools like exec, bash, and process that can run arbitrary commands on your machine. Yes, arbitrary.
The configuration lives in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json — a JSON5 file that controls everything from DM policies to which tools agents can use.

Why Solana Devs Should Pay Attention
If you're using OpenClaw (or any AI agent with shell access) to set up your Solana dev environment — installing the Solana CLI, Anchor, SPL Token packages, or pulling dependencies — you're essentially letting an AI run npm install, cargo install, and sh scripts on your behalf.
Here's the problem:
When an AI agent runs npm install for you, it's executing npm lifecycle scripts that can run arbitrary code during installation. A malicious or compromised Solana-related package could:
- Exfiltrate your private keys from
~/.config/solana/id.json - Install a backdoor in your shell profile
- Modify your Anchor project's
deployscript - Read your
.envfiles with RPC endpoints and wallet mnemonics
You wouldn't see any of this happening — the agent just says "done installing."
Real talk: Your Solana keypair at ~/.config/solana/id.json is a plain JSON file. Any process with file system access can read it. If you're running an AI agent with exec or bash tool access and no sandboxing, that agent (or anything it installs) can access your keys.
The Safety Playbook
Here's how to use OpenClaw (or any AI agent) safely when working with Solana tooling.
1. Enable Sandboxing — Seriously
OpenClaw supports Docker-based sandboxing that isolates agent tool execution in containers. This is configured in openclaw.json under agents.defaults.sandbox:

2. Lock Down Tool Policies
OpenClaw lets you define which tools agents can use. Deny rules always win over allow rules — use this to block dangerous operations:

3. Use Allowlists, Not Open Policies
OpenClaw's DM policy defaults to pairing mode — unknown senders get a one-time code that you must approve. Don't change this to open. The configuration at channels.<channel>.dmPolicy controls this:

Run openclaw security audit --deep regularly. It probes your live Gateway configuration and flags risky settings like open DM policies, unrestricted tool access, and exposed network ports. Use --fix to auto-apply safe defaults.
4. Be Careful With Plugins
OpenClaw loads plugins from node_modules/@openclaw/* and extensions/*/ directories via its plugin loader at src/plugins/loader.ts. These plugins run in-process with the Gateway — meaning they have the same access as the Gateway itself.
When OpenClaw installs plugins, it runs npm pack followed by npm install --omit=dev. This means npm lifecycle scripts execute during installation — the exact same supply-chain vector that makes installing random Solana packages risky. Only install plugins from sources you explicitly trust, and prefer pinned versions.
5. Never Store Keys Where Agents Can Reach
Separate Your Wallets
Use a dedicated devnet wallet for AI-assisted work. Never let an agent anywhere near your mainnet keypair.
Use Environment Isolation
Keep your real Solana config (~/.config/solana/) outside the agent's sandbox workspace. Mount only what's needed.
Rotate After Exposure
If you accidentally ran an agent with full host access and your keypair was readable, rotate your keys. It's not paranoia — it's hygiene.

The Elevated Escape Hatch (And Why It's Dangerous)
OpenClaw has a feature called elevated execution — an exec-only escape hatch that lets specific commands run on the host even when the session is sandboxed. This exists for legitimate use cases (like system-level operations that can't run in Docker).
But if you're installing Solana tooling, don't use elevated mode unless you absolutely understand what the command does. An npm install that runs elevated bypasses your entire sandbox. That's the whole point — and the whole risk.
The Messaging App Problem: Slack, Discord, WhatsApp & More
Here's the part that most people overlook. OpenClaw doesn't just run on your terminal — it bridges directly into your messaging apps. We're talking WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal, iMessage, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Matrix, and more.
That means an AI agent can read your messages, respond on your behalf, and take actions triggered by what people send you. Let that sink in for a second.
When you connect OpenClaw to your messaging apps, you're giving an AI agent a live communication channel that other people can interact with. Here's what can go wrong:
- Prompt injection via messages — Someone in a Slack channel or Discord server sends a carefully crafted message. Your agent processes it and executes malicious instructions — installing packages, running scripts, or exfiltrating data
- Social engineering at scale — The agent could be tricked into sharing sensitive information about your projects, keys, or infrastructure through normal-sounding conversations
- Impersonation — The agent responds as you. Your teammates, friends, or clients might not know they're talking to an AI. Bad answers, leaked info, or inappropriate responses — and it's your name attached
- Cross-channel data leaks — Information from a private Slack workspace could end up in a Telegram group if session isolation isn't configured properly. OpenClaw's
session.dmScopesetting controls this, but the default might not be what you expect - Always-on attack surface — Unlike a CLI tool you close when you're done, a messaging bridge runs 24/7. That's a permanent attack surface connected to your machine, your file system, and your accounts
The #1 mistake: Setting dmPolicy: "open" and groupPolicy: "open" on all channels so "it just works." This means anyone who can DM you or post in your groups can control your AI agent — and by extension, your machine. OpenClaw's own security docs call this out explicitly.
How to Connect Messaging Apps Safely
Start With One Channel
Don't connect everything at once. Start with one messaging app you control tightly (like a private Slack workspace), test it thoroughly, then expand.
Use Pairing Mode
Keep dmPolicy: "pairing" (the default). Every new person who DMs your agent gets a one-time code that YOU must approve with openclaw pairing approve. No code, no access.
Lock Down Groups
Set groupPolicy: "allowlist" and explicitly list which groups the agent can respond in. A bot that responds to every group it's added to is a bot waiting to be exploited.
Enable Session Isolation
Set session.dmScope: "per-channel-peer" in your config. This prevents conversations from one person on Telegram from leaking context into another person's session on Discord.
You've connected OpenClaw to your team's Slack workspace. A new member joins and DMs the bot asking it to 'run npm install exploit-kit'. What happens with default settings?
What About Voice?
OpenClaw also supports Voice Wake and Talk Mode on macOS, iOS, and Android. That means you can speak commands to your agent. Cool, right? But also think about this: if someone nearby says something that sounds like a command, or if a podcast you're listening to contains trigger phrases, your agent could potentially act on it. Always configure wake words carefully and keep voice mode disabled when you're not actively using it.
